Dan Shechtman is the Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, an Associate of the US Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, and Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University.

In 2011 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of quasicrystals. His research challenged science's understanding of crystals, which were previously thought to contain repeating patterns. In quasicrystals, the atoms were packed together in a well-defined pattern that never repeats.

His discovery changed our understanding of the behaviour of atoms and is considered by many to be a scientific revolution.

Professor Shechtman obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science in Materials Engineering and a PhD from the Technion.

He has gone on to hold positions with Aerospace Research Laboratories at Wright Patterson AFB, John Hopkins University and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology.

He is a member of numerous science academies, including the European Academy of Sciences, American National Academy of Engineering and Israel Academy of Sciences.

In addition to being a Nobel Laureate, Professor Shechtman received the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) 25th Anniversary Award (2008), EMET Prize in Chemistry (2002), Wolf Prize in Physics (1999) and Israel Prize in Physics (1998).

Each year, ECU invites an eminent person to deliver the Vice-Chancellor's Distinguished Oration. Previous Orators have included former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Right Hon. the Lord Darling of Roulanish, Chief Justice Dr. Robert French AC, the Hon. Fred Chaney AO and Rio Tinto CEO Dr. Sam Walsh AO.
