RE: An Alternative Course Pathway for some Year 10 Science Students

Greetings Science Colleagues,

A number of years ago in my role as Head of Science at Morley Senior High School, (Update: I officially retired on Monday 21032016), I realised that the educational needs and career aspirations of some of our Year 10 science students would be better served by offering by application, interview, and selection in Semester 2, the VET Certificate 1 in Resources and Infrastructure Operations.

With much-appreciated support from Principal Gay Fortune, the ‘selected’ Year 10 science students instead of studying the Year 10 ACARA/WA Science course for 240 (4 * 60) minutes each school week; in Semester 2, the ‘selected’ Year 10 science students study for the VET Certificate 1 in Resources and Infrastructure Operations during Year 10 science timetabled-time.

Year 10 science students who achieve Certificate 1 in Resources and Infrastructure Operations in Year 10, then go onto study VET Certificate 2 in Sampling and Measurement at North Metropolitan TAFE.

The ‘successful’ Certificate 1 students in Years 11 and 12 are released from school for the last three weeks of Term 1, 2, 3 and (4 if needed for ‘catch-up’ students) to attend and study for their Certificate 2 in Sampling and Measurement at North Metropolitan TAFE.

In Year 10 science time for the ‘selected’ Year 10 science students we ran two classes of VET in Science, one class on each side of the school timetable, viz., X and Y timetable modules.

To teach VET Certificate 1 in Resources and Infrastructure Operations in Year 10, our science teachers must have gained a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Should colleagues be interested in learning more about VET in Science at Morley SHS, they could contact the VET Coordinator: Harry Pasich, whose email address is linked at URL 5?

Best Wishes,
