   [cid:image002.png at 01D2ADEB.538F0F50] WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE! - Mildew Mania 2017 - Citizen Science Project

Curtin University would like to invite schools to help with an ongoing citizen-science research project aimed at protecting West Australia's barley and wheat crops from the damaging effect of powdery mildew disease. In WA, this disease causes the most economic impact on barley and wheat. Researchers at Curtin University's Centre for Crop and Disease Management aim to give plant breeders and growers the tools they require to control this disease and therefore reduce the state's losses.

Mildew Mania will be running for its 7th year in 2017. Last year over 1800 students participated!

We are looking for keen students and teachers to help us again this year. Particularly schools in from regional areas as we are very concerned about the disease in agricultural zones.

Proposed timeline:

  *   End of April 2017 - Registrations close
  *   May 2017 - experiment packs arrive in mail
  *   May to early August 2017 - prime barley planting time
  *   May to August 2017 - growing season
  *   June to September 2017 - samples photographed and collected by students and mailed to Curtin University
  *   August to October 2017 - samples tested in Curtin labs
  *   November 2017 - results published in newsletter to schools

BASF Kids' Lab provides children with the opportunity to discover the world of chemistry through simple, fun-filled experiments and highlights how chemistry plays a role in enriching our daily lives.  In 2017, BASF have again partnered with Curtin University for the fourth year in a row to offer this to Western Australia primary schools.

This FREE event will be held at the Curtin University Resources and Chemistry Precinct in Bentley.

Interested primary schools may register an expression of interest to attend this event.

LIMITED PLACES

Date                    Week 1: 23rd of June - 29th of June  2017 (weekend excluded)
                       Week 2: 28th of August - 1st of September 2017
Time                  Between 9am and 2.30pm
Location                Curtin University, Bentley Campus
Audience                Year 4 to Year 7
Number per session        Minimum 25 maximum 60.
Cost                   Free, plus a bus subsidy is available for eligible schools  (Terms and Conditions apply)
