The use of poisons to carry out murder has a long and sordid history. The well known science author John Emsley has described analytical chemists as the "unsung heroes" of poisoning investigations.  In this centenary year of the foundation of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, join Curtin University's Professor Simon Lewis as he gives an account of the history and science of analytical chemistry applied to forensic toxicology illustrated by some notorious poisoning cases.
 
Professor Simon Lewis BSc (Hons), PhD, CChem FRSC FRACI is Professor of Forensic and Analytical Chemistry at Curtin University where he teaches undergraduate analytical chemistry and forensic science. He leads the Forensic and Analytical Chemistry Research Group within the Curtin Institute of Functional Molecules and Interfaces and Department of Chemistry, Curtin University at Curtin, with his research interests focused on chemical techniques applied to forensic analysis. This research has been carried out with a a number of forensic service providers including ChemCentre and the WA Police. Simon is currently the Chair of the RACI (WA) Branch Chemical Education Group and is enthusiastically involved in outreach, using forensic science and analytical chemistry as vehicles to engage children and the general public in science.
