 Greetings Science Colleagues,

“This [ACER] Snapshot 10 poses the questions: has the climate in Australian classrooms changed; and have student-teacher relationships deteriorated over the past 15 years?”

Has classroom climate changed?

“Has the climate of our classrooms changed over the past 15 years? The answer seems to be a case of ‘definitely maybe’. Students report more frequent noise and disorder, and appear to be listening to their teachers less; principals say disruption and lack of respect have the same, or less, impact on student learning; and students say their relationships with teachers have improved.”

ACER Snapshots 10 asks three pertinent questions in relation to Trends in Classroom Climate in Australian schools as measured by TIMSS and PISA test scores.

ACER TIMSS Report URL: https://www.acer.org/timss/australian-results-timss-2015-dec-2016 <https://www.acer.org/timss/australian-results-timss-2015-dec-2016>
ACER PISA Report URL: http://research.acer.edu.au/ozpisa/22/ <http://research.acer.edu.au/ozpisa/22/>
Question 1: What could be behind this difference in [‘perception’] between students’ and principals’ views?

Question 2: Is your classroom noisy? Question 3: Is this noise productive or disruptive?

Is “unproductive classroom noise” from ‘difficult to manage students’ having a deleterious effect on Australian teacher’ wellbeing? I invite teachers to complete the SLRC Australian teacher [occupational] stress and wellbeing survey.

Would the ‘perception’ of Principals and Deputy Principals change if they were required to teach one class of Year 9 students for one school term every five (5) years?

Thanks and Best Wishes,

Michael John McGarry
