[Catalist] STEM Project? The WW2 ‘work’ and troubled Life of Alan Turing

An article in the new scientist on how mathematical concepts developed in humans (The origin of Mathematics) mentions an interesting fact about Aboriginal languages in Australia.

There are 189 different languages of which 86% have no words for numbers above 4 or 5 suggesting competence with larger numbers only became necessary due to agriculture and trading practices in other societies. I wonder how this affects the Outback people in their modern life.

If you are in England soon you might consider a trip to Isaac Newton’s school in Grantham, Lincs. My friend’s wife works at The Kings’ School and so I got to go inside and even met the principal. I think it was built in the 1500s and where Newton was judged as being not particularly clever! I got to see the main dining room which looks like the one at Hogwarts and when I stood on a table  to look at the window-sill, there was that famous man’s initials that he scoured out of the limestone. So he must have been a bit of a naughty boy!

Later we visited Newton’s farm-let where he was born – Woolsthorpe and sat under the famous apple tree  which now has a plaque tto commemorate when the queen visited. The old pound note actually had Newton’s image and an extract from Pricipia on the back.

Worth a visit.

I found the portrayal by actor Benedict Cumberbatch of Alan Turing a very evocative experience, especially Turing’s school days at Sherborne School.

I found the treatment of Alan Turing by British society, including naval command and the Law and police of that time extremely sad.
