Royal Australian Chemical Institute WA Branch presents the 2018 Bayliss Youth Lecture

From Trojan Horses to Pro Donkey Riding and Everything in Between: My Life as a Nanoscientist

Dr Tristan Clemons, University of Western Australia

Dr Tristan Clemon’s research focuses on the development of tiny nanoparticles, one thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair which are designed for applications in drug delivery in medicine for diseases such as cancer, and spinal cord and burn injuries. These nanoparticles can be engineered to have a range of different functions including delivering a drug to the site needed in the body, while also incorporating imaging probes to determine where the nanoparticle is releasing its payload; two functions which can lead to the avoidance of serious side affects. Not only is Tristan a research scientist but he also represents Australia with the Kookaburras, his talk will discuss some of the parallels he has experienced between elite sport and his science, while providing a few interesting stories along the way.

About Tristan
After completing a BSc (Nanotechnology) (Hons) Degree at Curtin University, Tristan completed his PhD studies in 2014 as a part of the BioNano research group led by Iyer Swaminathan at the University of Western Australia. Tristan was successful in obtaining a NHMRC Peter Doherty Australian Biomedical Research Fellowship which he begun in late 2014 investigating nano applications for wound healing and scar treatments. His research interests focus on targeted nanoparticle delivery of therapeutics for a range of diseases including scarring, heart disease and cancer. Tristan is also a keen hockey player and is a member of the Australian Mens Hockey Squad, the Kookaburras. He has represented his nation on a number of occasions at tournaments both here in Australia and abroad and has also recently played in the professional Hockey India League for the Punjab Warriors. In 2018 Tristan will not only be focussing on the Bayliss Lecture series but will also be aiming to gain selection to attend the Commonwealth Games in April on the Gold Coast. Tristan can be followed on Twitter @clemo_11.
