[Catalist] UWA Emerging Engineers Competition - now open for female students years 1 - 12

Hello STAWA team,

I am writing to announce that the UWA Emerging Engineers Competition is now open for student and teacher registrations.

The competition is for female students across WA in years 1 - 12 (including homechools), and has an emphasis on scientific investigation, research skills, collaborative work, creative and innovative thinking, testing/ prototyping, and communication skills. It is themed on marine engineering and science. Teacher feedback from 2019 suggests that it ties in very well with marine biology, environmental science, chemistry and physics.

The competition is supported by free educational materials developed by scientists and educators, opportunities to visit the world-leading marine research centre at UWA, and a total prize pool of $1000 that includes unique experiential prizes.

We are hoping to offer this opportunity to as many students possible across WA.

UWA Is excited to launch the Emerging Engineers Competition, a multidisciplinary STEM program for female students across WA. Girls are invited to work in teams to design an innovative solution to a real engineering issue. Participants have opportunities to connect with STEM professionals, visit UWA and other locations, and access a range of digital educational resources.  Finalists will pitch their ideas live in front of expert judges for their chance to win a final prize worth $1000.

This year, the competition theme is 'biofouling', the unwanted growth of marine organisms on manmade structures. It is an unsolved problem that costs millions to many industries, including offshore renewable energies and transportation. It is a complex problem that integrates many curriculum subjects including marine biology, environmental science, chemistry, technologies and physics.

The Emerging Engineers Competition is free to enter for all female students across WA in Years 1 - 12 (or in equivalent registered homeschools). Teams must register by end of Term 1 (12 April). Final submissions close in early Term 3 (31 July).
