Dear Science Teachers,

My name is Dr. Marji Puotinen. I am a research scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and in my spare time I teach kids about climate change (What do penguins and coral reefs have in common? | Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/penguins.and.coral.reefs>) and volunteer in schools via the CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools Program. I am reaching out to you to let you know about an international drawing contest for kids (https://kidscareaboutclimate.org<https://kidscareaboutclimate.org/>) ‘Kids Care about Climate Change 2021: Plant a tree, cool the Earth!’ that is happening until 30 June this year that your students would likely enjoy being part of.

Here is a 5 minute video (https://youtu.be/KRNjSuRQYnU ) and a 24 minute video (https://youtu.be/tazZVUMf30c ) explaining the contest. In short, kids draw what they love most about trees as a way to help cool the Earth from climate change, and we plant a tree for each entry (trees planted by 15 Trees - https://15trees.com.au/ ). We’ll use every drawing to make a GIANT banner (7m by 5m) to film in forests worldwide and display at the United Nations Biodiversity conference in China in October this year!!

Prizes include 30-minute Zoom calls with environmental scientists / artists / activists / authors from around the world plus one lucky drawing will be made into an avatar (‘skin’) for the popular game Fortnite and another lucky winner will be interviewed on an international podcast about climate change.

In 2018, I ran a similar contest that got 1,246 entries from 11 countries and 120 schools. A huge banner of the drawings was filmed in Antarctica (https://youtu.be/ZIhQF0Hpeck, https://youtu.be/tO4ILAdjiog) and marched in 3 climate strikes in Perth.

Please share with your networks and consider helping your students to enter! Any questions can be emailed to M.Puotinen at aims.gov.au. I can also do a virtual or in person visit with your students to tell them all about it and show them how to enter (or watch this video - https://youtu.be/2WLBDEBv8Mg). So far, we have 235 entries from 12 countries (Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Canada, India, Mozambique, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom, Uruguay, USA) and 58 schools - with more promised from Columbia, China, South Africa, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. We'd love for you to join us!

Thanks!
Marji
