Keynote Speaker Bios:

Austal Principal Naval Architect - Sam Abbott is an expert in ship design and is excited to present to the 2022 Maritime and Marine Forum on the topic of hull design, when specific features might be considered for selection and how these selections might be influenced by the operational requirements of the vessel. Sam has more than 20 years’ experience as a naval architect with Austal in Western Australia and is currently leading Austal’s R&D department. Through his career he has led a range of technical, commercial, manufacturing and management projects across the business, liaising at all levels within the company and with clients, suppliers and regulatory bodies.

BAE Systems Engineering Assessment Lead - Jon Emonson is a Chartered Naval Architect and a keen dabbler in the grand realm of ship design with a particular interest in ship stability and hydrodynamics. He has 13 years’ experience post-grad, including time as a Marine Engineering Officer in the RAN and with private enterprise as part of the defence industry. He works as part of the Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA) contract maintaining and upgrading the ANZAC Class frigates, the workhorses of the RAN fleet. He is skilled in Engineering Management, Project Management, Maintenance Management, Marine Engineering and CAD/CAM/CAE. He will speak about the ins and outs of ship stability.

Other speakers

Naval Shipbuilding College (NSC) Training Solutions Manager in Western Australia - Rebecca Seage is an aeronautical engineer with an extensive STEM career. Rebecca will introduce the ground-breaking role of the Naval Shipbuilding College, an Australian Government Initiative.

Luerssen Australia Head of Strategy and Government Relations -  Matt Moran will provide a fascinating overview of the shipbuilding industry in WA, job opportunities for young people and projects underway - including Luerssen Australia’s key project, building 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Australian Navy. Matt is a visiting fellow at the University of Western Australia’s Defence and Security Institute and was the inaugural Executive Director of Defence West. He has a fascinating CV, deploying to Afghanistan with the Australian Army as a public affairs officer in 2009 and East Timor in 2007, working as a federal political reporter for Network Ten from 2011 to 2015 – where he won a Walkley Award – and holding Ministerial and Prime Ministerial adviser roles.
