[Catalist] SPIRIT - remote research telescopes free for schools

Hi Melissa,

I am looking at using the Spirit telescopes with two years groups this year, last year we didn't manage it but I really want to give it a go in 2022.

I was also wondering do you do overnight STEM camps at UWA for Year 9 students, that would include use of telescopes? I have this idea of a cross curricular camp for thirty students called "Universe and Me" that would include a trip to the Pawsey Centre and perhaps a SKA Virtual Tour, then a visit to Scitech Planetarium?

Does this sound workable/feasible?

Hello Everyone,



SPIRIT is a suite of remote research- grade telescopes provided by the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR). Access to these remote telescopes is free to all WA secondary schools. All that is needed to get started is an internet connection. This program can be implemented in a completely remote fashion, including class visits and teacher professional development.



With SPIRIT, you have the option of scheduling images during class time or ‘driving’ the telescope in real time at night.



The aim of the SPIRIT program is to provide STEM opportunities for students through the lens of modern astronomy. Schools can utilise the telescopes in a variety of ways including taking images of deep space objects, examining the structure and evolution of galaxies, calculating the mass of Jupiter or other bespoke programs that suit your school.



Coming new this year is a fourth telescope, a lifecycle of stars program, and teacher professional development days.



We provide free teacher professional development as well as free school visits to assist students in their use of SPIRIT. These visits can be done via a video conference platform depending on visitor limitations, and distance from Perth.
