The Royal Society of Western Australia is presenting a broad-ranging
symposium on agriculture in WA.

Part of their mission is to increase engagement with secondary educators
and students. The level of the talks will be similar to those of
CONSTAWA keynote presentations. They assume a scientifically literate
audience that is not specialist in the area of the presentation. In
other words, this is great for both teachers and bright students to
learn about what is going on in Western Australian science.

The conference takes place over a Friday and a Saturday. Is this of any
interest to you or your students? What kind of support would help you to
make this opportunity available to yourself or your students? There are
resources and funding available to assist, so feel free to contact me
off list to discuss your requirements.

Regards,

Leon Harris

About this event
This two-day symposium will cover ‘agriculture’ in its broadest possible
sense. It
includes presentations about Aboriginal practices of agriculture and the
plants
and animals they used for food, and the potential for these species to
be used for
food production now. If also addresses the question of WA’s potential to
feed SE
Asia (which some people dream about). Massive clearing of the wheatbelt (‘a
million acres a year’) and replacing karri forests by farms fields (in
vain) will
feature. Restoration of our degraded lands and their use for saline
agriculture will
also feature. Is dryland salinity still an issue, or has this problem
vanished given
our declining rainfall? The symposium will feature a wide range of
disciplines,
including history, agronomy, ecology, archaeology, to name just a few
