Theoretically that is true but I think you will find that markers always stick to 3 sf regardless. In physics no marks are taken off for sfs in the exam except for estimatikns thne thevrule is 2sf maximum. Roy

Hi Andrew,
Its the number of significant figures which are contained in the smallest number of significant figures given in the question.
So, if a question has masses given with 3 sig fig for one mass and 4 sig fig for another mass, your answer would be to 3 sig fig
