Mildew Mania Celebrates Five Years!

14,000 students engaged in agriculture science!

"Mildew Mania" is a free citizen science project that links both urban and rural school students with agriculture has this week celebrated five years of success with one of the first schools to sign up to the project – Coolbinia Primary School.

Over the past five years more than 14,000 Western Australian students from years 1 through to 12 from more than 220 schools have participated in Mildew Mania, helping scientists in the fight against powdery mildew, a barley disease costing WA farmers up to $100 million in crop losses and fungicide control per year.

Mildew Mania involves students “catching” local powdery mildew on different varieties of barley, and sending the samples to researchers at the Centre for Crop and Disease Management, a national research centre co-supported by Curtin University and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) CCDM researcher Dr Nola D’Souza said thanks to Mildew Mania, her research team has received powdery mildew samples from many locations across WA over the past five years, which has been pivotal in keeping better track of the pathogen and watching for the development of new pathotypes.

Does this sound like something your class would love to be involved in?
Registrations for 2017 are open now! Click here<http://curtin.us3.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=11166412bb2d176231974d5ac&id=65cf5f3273&e=6686909417>.

Mildew Mania participants gathers powdery mildew samples on barley grown at their schools, across WA, in order to help Scientists investigate study barley resistance genes with the aim of developing resistant crops to help farmers fight the disease. This is the year for your students to conduct meaningful science research that will have a real impact on Western Australian farming; barley powdery mildew costs Australian farmers over $100 million annually and is a major concern for the future of farming. Your results will be presented in formats suitable for both primary and secondary levels; the opportunities for data processing and critical thinking are endless!

Upcoming Free Event: RACI Bayliss Youth Lectures

Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? No, it’s your Brain! Analytical Chemistry Reveals the Hidden Secrets of Brain Function

Dr Mark Hackett uses the interactions of different wavelengths of light with biological materials to obtain a “fingerprint” of the composition of biological samples. Join him for the 2017 Bayliss Youth Lecture where he will explain how he uses light to investigate brain biochemistry during natural development and ageing, as well as biochemical events that lead to brain damage and neurodegenerative disease. The data obtained is used by an international (Australia, USA, Canada) and interdisciplinary team of scientists (chemists, physicists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and neurosurgeons), to develop new therapies to minimise or repair brain damage.

This is free event, hosted by the WA branch of the Royal Australian Chemistry Institute, designed to foster an interest of chemistry in young people. Presentation are aimed at high school students from Year 9+ and the general public.
