Dear All,

With apologies if I missed this being posted already, the following may be of interest for Chemistry students and teachers.

RACI Bayliss Lecture 2019:
Breaking Bad Down Under:
 Chemistry and Illicit Drug Investigations
Hannah Crisp
Team Leader, Clandestine Lab Investigations, Forensic Science Laboratory, ChemCentre
While TV shows such as Breaking Bad and Narcos familiarise viewers with the manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs, in reality, these crime scenes are far from glamorous or sophisticated! From identifying an unknown tablet or powder sample to safely dismantling active drug laboratories or giving expert scientific evidence in criminal proceedings, the role of a forensic chemist is crucial to illicit drug investigations. Join Hannah as she shares interesting case studies and examples that highlight the varied roles forensic chemists play in the investigation of drug crime in Western Australia.
The Bayliss Lecture is aimed at Year 10 high school students and above, but will also be of broad interest to the general public.
About Hannah
Hannah completed her BSc in Forensic Science at Curtin University, with her honours year spent developing a strategy at ChemCentre for profiling methylamphetamine seizures in Western Australia. Since then, Hannah has gained more than 13 years’ experience in clandestine laboratory and illicit drug analysis and has attended over 300 clandestine laboratory scenes in Western Australia. She manages a team of scientists who specialise in the attendance and analysis of clandestine laboratories as well as the analysis and reporting of routine illicit drug exhibits, drug profiling samples and clandestine remediation samples. She assisted with the development of national training guidelines for clandestine laboratory attendance and is heavily involved with the running of state and national training programs to ensure that all staff who attend clandestine laboratories are suitably trained to enable these scenes to be processed as safely and efficiently as possible. As a senior reporting chemist, Hannah frequently provides expert opinion and testimony relating to illicit drug manufacture and drug profiling criminal proceedings.
