ASTRO3D and ICRAR are offering a astronomy-based extension program for students usually under-represented in STEM fields.

ASTRO 3D-ICRAR Astronomy Education Program
A co-branded astronomy education program for under-represented secondary students (focusing on year 9s and 10s) using the SPIRIT<mailto:http://spirit.icrar.org> suite of remote internet telescopes.
The program will provide under-represented students with the opportunity to use the SPIRIT telescopes in a specialised school program designed to provide a real-life experience of modern astronomy and imaging techniques. The program will operate outside of normal classes for students nominated by their teachers.
A program for girls, students from under-privileged backgrounds other under-represented students, in years 9 and 10, run as an after-school program over a number of weeks introducing imaging with the SPIRIT telescopes. This program would include mentoring from ASTRO3D and ICRAR researchers/students and hands on work with the SPIRIT telescopes. The program would run for 6 weeks with 3 visits from an ASTRO3D-ICRAR researcher and support from ICRAR’s Outreach team. The aim of the program is to give students access to professional-grade equipment and to give hands on experience using a robotic telescope, taking and processing images. The students would would also be encouraged to create their own projects to give them the knowledge they can achieve tasks initially thought impossible.
If you would like to know more about the program you can check here https://www.icrar.org/outreach-education/outreach-initiatives/spirit-2/ or contact me at the email address below. We are especially looking for teachers interested in implementing this program in term one of 2020.
