Hello,

My name is Pierre BOUVAIS and I am a marine biologist and dive instructor
currently developing an educational project to be implemented in Western
Australia in rural coastal communities of Western Australia.

I am sending you this message as you may be able to help me, or direct me
toward the right person, to be able to implement my project in WA.

Please find attached to this email our proposal about the Educational
Managed Marine Area (EMMA). Currently, the work is in progress and I would
appreciate if you could keep the draft, I am sending you, confidential, but
I would love to hear from you if such pedagogical project could benefit
your work with Nature Conservation Margaret River Region.

“Educational Managed Marine Area” (EMMA) is a small coastal area, managed
in a participatory way by primary or secondary school pupils. It is an
educational and eco-friendly project to help young people better understand
and protect the marine environment. The children become part of a local
project that draws on the expertise of the school and local municipality,
along with user associations and environmental protection groups. In WA,
some communities may be interested in having their school rolling out an
educational program in which the pupils are involved within a “children’s
sea council” to implement actions with the help of local sea stakeholders
and elected officials. They can conduct an ecological survey in the chosen
area involving the children alongside scientific teams; discover the
activities within the area and develop new understanding in a real-life
situation; discuss the actions to prepare correct management of the area
and design a charter. Furthermore, the international network of EMMAs
could one day bring together children from different corners of the globe
to discuss and discover their respective ecosystems and cultures and to
challenge policymakers, users and citizens on their commitments and actions
for protecting the ocean.

Here is a video explaining the EMMA philosophy:

As for the EMMA, we are totally aware on how timely such project could
become for both teachers and stakeholders, this is why we are assembling a
team to minimise the amount of time and effort trying to link the EMMA
project to the WA curriculum and also to provide a catalogue of
ready-to-activities for the schools. To accompany me on this journey, I
will be supported by Dr. Ben Fitzpatrick from Oceanwise Australia, who has
extensive experience in creating and delivering innovative educational
content and I will be assisted by. Dr. Kimberley Lema who is a marine
biologist who recently retrained herself to become a science teacher.

I would be delighted to provide you with more details and discuss directly
with you at your convenience.

Kind Regards,

Pierre BOUVAIS, PhD,
