FISHERIES PROFESSIONAL LEARNING - SAMPLING IN THE SEA

Fisheries scientists use a range of methods to understand more about our fish stocks and their habitats to ensure their sustainability. In our professional learning session this term, we're investigating a couple of key sampling methods used by our scientists in the aquatic environment that can also be used by schools.

Dr Euan Harvey, professor of marine science at Curtin University, will give an informative presentation on Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS) - what are they? What are the advantages of using such a system in the marine environment? What are the limitations? And what data can we collect from them? We'll also provide you with some ideas about creating and using your own BRUV.

We have a variety of video footage from around the state, including Abrolhos Islands, Rottnest Trench, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Dunsborough and Bunbury artificial reefs, all ready for you to use in the classroom.

We also have Mark Lehmann from Butler College joining us to share some of his tried and tested plankton sampling ideas and activities that he has conducted with his own classes.

As always, we'll discuss some of the Marine WATERs resources and Fisheries education activities that may applicable for use in your classroom. We encourage you to bring along any activities and/or ideas to share as well.

This session is aimed at Year 7-12 Science teachers, including pre-service teachers and will include take-away hard copy resources and a certificate of attendance.

Light refreshments and registration from 3.45pm for a 4.00pm start.
